StudySnap — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
The short version
StudySnap has no account and does not ask for your email address or password. To make practice questions, the app sends the text of your notes—not the original photos, recordings, or files—to Olaverse's question service over HTTPS. The service uses the text only to answer that request: it does not save it, log it, use it to train AI, or keep it after the response is returned. Your sets, questions, scores, and progress stay on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud storage. Free users see Google AdMob ads; Pro users do not. Apple handles payments, and RevenueCat checks subscription status using a random identifier.
1. Who We Are and What This Policy Covers
StudySnap, listed on the App Store as Study Snap: Puff Teaches, is published by Olaverse ("we", "us", or "our"). Its bundle identifier is studysnap.app.labs.olaverse. This policy covers the StudySnap app. Our website privacy policy covers olaverse.co.uk separately.
For support or a privacy request, email contact@olaverse.co.uk.
2. No Account
StudySnap has no sign-up or login. The app does not ask for an email address, password, phone number, or social-media account. The name you enter in Settings is stored on your device and in your private iCloud storage as described below; it is not used to create an Olaverse account.
3. Notes and the Question Service
Generating practice questions is StudySnap's core online feature. When you ask the app to create questions, it splits your note text into passages and sends those passages over HTTPS to Olaverse's question service at olaverse-api-api.modal.run. The service uses the text only to generate questions and, when the language setting is Auto-detect, to identify the language.
The service may receive text obtained from:
- notes you type or paste;
- scans and photos you choose;
- PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and text files you choose;
- web pages you share to StudySnap; and
- lecture transcripts created on your device.
The original photo, audio recording, document, or web-page file is not uploaded. Only the text extracted from it on your device is sent. The generated questions are returned to the app and saved as part of your study set.
4. The AI Does Not Keep Your Notes
Note passages are processed transiently for the request. Neither the question service nor its AI model retains them after returning the response. We do not write note text to an application log or database, use it to train or improve an AI model, build a profile from it, or allow people to review it as part of the service. The retention period for note text is therefore zero after the request finishes.
The question service runs on infrastructure supplied by Modal Labs. Modal processes the request on our behalf so the service can operate. You can read Modal's Privacy Policy. As with any internet connection, the service's hosting infrastructure necessarily receives connection information such as your IP address while routing the request. We do not use that information to identify you or combine it with your note text.
Although the note text is not kept, avoid submitting information you do not have the right to use or especially sensitive personal information that is not needed for studying.
5. Processing That Normally Stays on Your Device
- Photos and scans: Apple's Vision framework reads the text on your device. The image itself is not sent to us.
- Documents: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and text files are opened and read on your device. The file itself is not sent to us.
- Lecture recordings: audio is transcribed on your device, then deleted. It is never uploaded to Olaverse.
- Voice answers: speech recognition runs on your device where supported. On older devices, or for languages that do not support on-device recognition, Apple's speech service may process the audio. That audio goes to Apple, not Olaverse. See Apple's Siri, Dictation & Privacy notice.
- Puffy's AI features: answer checking, multiple choice, cheat sheets, and Ask Puffy use Apple Intelligence on your device. Their prompts and results are not sent to Olaverse's question service.
- Reminders: study reminders and focus-timer alerts are local notifications scheduled by your device. StudySnap does not use a push-notification server.
Text extracted from a photo, document, web page, or lecture transcript does leave the device only when you ask StudySnap to generate questions, as explained in section 3.
6. Local Storage and iCloud
StudySnap stores your study sets, notes, generated questions, quiz history, scores, reminder settings, and widget data in the app's private storage on your device. Your progress—including XP, pearls, streak, outfits, achievements, and the name you enter in Settings—is also stored there.
If you are signed in to iCloud, your study sets can sync through iCloud and your progress can sync through iCloud key-value storage. This data is stored in your own private iCloud storage under your Apple Account. Olaverse cannot access, read, or recover it. Apple handles iCloud data under Apple's Privacy Policy.
7. Web Pages and Challenge Files You Share
If you share a web link into StudySnap, the app connects directly to that website to download the page and read its text. The website can receive the ordinary connection information sent by your device, such as your IP address, and handles it under its own privacy policy. If you then generate questions, the extracted text is handled as described in sections 3 and 4.
A challenge file contains the selected set's notes and questions, your best score, and the name you entered in Settings. StudySnap creates it on your device. It leaves your device only when you choose a destination such as Messages or AirDrop in Apple's share sheet. Olaverse does not receive a copy. The person, app, or service you select is responsible for the file after you share it.
8. Advertising for Free Users
The free version of StudySnap uses Google AdMob to show ads. Pro users do not receive ads, and the AdMob ad service is not used to show them ads. To serve, limit, personalise, and measure ads, Google may collect:
- the advertising identifier (IDFA), but only if you allow tracking in Apple's prompt;
- your IP address and a rough location derived from it;
- device, operating-system, app, performance, and diagnostic information; and
- information about ads shown and how you interact with them.
We do not send Google your notes, study sets, quiz answers, scores, name, or lecture audio. Google handles advertising data under the Google Privacy Policy and explains its handling of partner-app data in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services. We may see aggregate advertising totals, but not your notes or an Olaverse profile about you.
9. Ad Consent and Your Choices
StudySnap uses Google's User Messaging Platform to show a consent form where required, including in the UK and EEA. You can review or change that choice from Ad privacy in the app's Settings.
- If you allow tracking in Apple's prompt, iOS makes the advertising identifier available to Google for personalised advertising and measurement.
- If you decline, the identifier is withheld. The free app still works and may show non-personalised or limited ads.
- You can change Apple's tracking permission under Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- You can stop in-app advertising entirely by using StudySnap Pro.
Olaverse does not sell personal information. Google's use of data for personalised advertising may be treated as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under some privacy laws; the controls above let you opt out.
10. Subscriptions and RevenueCat
Apple processes StudySnap Pro purchases through the App Store. The app and Olaverse never receive your card or bank details. StudySnap uses RevenueCat, Inc. to check subscription status and restore purchases. RevenueCat receives:
- a randomly generated anonymous app user identifier;
- App Store purchase history, receipts, and subscription status; and
- basic device and app details, such as app and operating-system versions, store country, and IP address.
RevenueCat does not receive your notes, questions, answers, scores, recordings, name, advertising identifier, or payment-card details from StudySnap. Read RevenueCat's Privacy Policy. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription; subscriptions are managed in your Apple Account settings.
11. Permissions
StudySnap may ask for the following iOS permissions, each for the stated feature:
- Camera: scanning notes.
- Photo library: choosing photos of notes through Apple's system picker.
- Microphone: recording lectures and voice answers.
- Speech recognition: turning speech into text.
- Notifications: study reminders and the focus timer.
- Tracking: allowing personalised advertising; this is optional.
You can review or change these permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
12. What StudySnap Does Not Do
- No Olaverse account: there is no sign-up, email, password, or social login.
- No note retention: note passages are discarded when question generation finishes.
- No AI training: your notes are not used to train or improve models.
- No Olaverse analytics or crash-reporting SDK: we have not added an analytics or crash-reporting service to the app. Google and RevenueCat may collect diagnostics needed for their own services as described above.
- No location permission: the app does not request or track precise location. Google may infer a rough area from the IP address used for ads.
- No contacts access.
- No sale of data by Olaverse.
13. Retention and Deleting Data
- Question-service note text: retained for zero time after the request finishes.
- Study sets: delete a set in the app to remove it from the app and iCloud.
- On-device data: deleting StudySnap removes the data stored by the app on that device.
- iCloud data: you can remove remaining app data under Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Manage Storage.
- Subscriptions: manage or cancel them through Apple. Uninstalling does not cancel a subscription.
Google, Apple, RevenueCat, and any service to which you share a challenge file keep information under their own retention rules. You may ask us to help with a RevenueCat record by emailing us. Because the record uses a random identifier, we may need that identifier or an App Store receipt to locate it. Transaction records may need to be retained where tax or accounting law requires.
14. Children
StudySnap is a general-audience study app and is not directed specifically at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect account details from children, because the app has no accounts. A parent or guardian should supervise use by a child who is below the age at which they can consent to data processing in their country, including choosing notes to submit, advertising consent, and purchases. If you believe a child's information has been handled contrary to this policy, contact us so we can investigate and help. Apple's parental controls can restrict purchases, tracking, and app access.
15. If You Contact Us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include. We use it to reply and keep it only as long as needed for support and necessary business records. We do not add you to a marketing list. Please do not include your notes or other sensitive content unless it is necessary for your request.
16. Legal Basis and Your Privacy Rights
For UK and EEA data-protection purposes, Olaverse is the controller for note text while our question service processes it, subscription information available through RevenueCat, and messages you send us. Modal and RevenueCat act as service providers processing relevant data on our behalf. Google and Apple also process data under their own privacy policies for advertising, App Store, iCloud, and speech services.
- Question generation: necessary to provide the feature you request.
- Subscription information: necessary to provide and restore StudySnap Pro.
- Personalised advertising and device access: your consent where required.
- Non-personalised advertising and support: our legitimate interests in funding the free app and responding to requests, subject to your legal rights and local law.
- Required transaction records: compliance with tax, accounting, and other legal obligations.
Depending on where you live, you may ask to access, correct, delete, restrict, or receive a copy of personal information we control, and object to or withdraw consent for some processing. Email contact@olaverse.co.uk to exercise those rights. We cannot retrieve note passages from the question service because they are not retained, and we cannot access information in your private iCloud storage.
If you are in the UK, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. If you are in the EEA, you may contact your local data-protection authority.
17. Security and International Processing
StudySnap uses HTTPS to protect note text in transit. No method of electronic transmission or processing is completely secure, but we limit what leaves your device and do not retain note text. Modal, Google, RevenueCat, and Apple may process information in countries outside your own. Their privacy notices describe their locations and international-transfer safeguards.
18. Changes to This Policy
If StudySnap changes how it handles information, we will update this policy and the date above before the changed version is released. We will also update the app's App Store privacy disclosures where required.
19. Contact
Privacy questions and requests can be sent to Olaverse at contact@olaverse.co.uk.
